Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre’s (JPMC) Journey
Inception and Renaming
Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) was founded in 1930 as the Medical Corps Hospital, serving only military personnel. In 1942, it was renamed the British General Hospital and continued its operations as a 100-bed facility with essential amenities.
Association with the Father of the Nation
Following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, the hospital requested permission to bear the name of the country’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He generously agreed to the condition that the hospital be open to the whole public. As a result, the name of the Medical Corps Hospital/British General Hospital was changed to Jinnah Central Hospital (JCH). As Karachi served as the capital city, it attracted numerous federal government employees and their families. Given the inadequacy of the old Civil Hospital, the Government of Pakistan created JCH as a well-equipped hospital to satisfy their medical needs.
Dow Medical College Integration
Dow Medical College (DMC) got associated with JCH in 1952. In August 1954, the Pakistani National Assembly authorised the formation of the Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI), recognising the importance of foundational sciences education for higher medical education. Initially situated at DMC in Karachi, the site for BMSI’s development was relocated to JCH’s premises. The BMSI was founded as an innovative medical facility under the direction of Dr. Paul A. Nicoll, Head of Physiology, together with Drs. Osgood D. Priddle and Rolla N. Harger, Professors of Pharmacology and Biochemistry. Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology were some of the six departments and laboratories that made up the school. The actual inauguration took place on April 11, 1959, and prominent speakers included General Muhammad Ayub Khan, President of Pakistan, Dr. Harman B. Wells, President of Indiana University, and Col. M. Jaffer, Director General of Health.
Growth and the Opening Ceremony.
On June 1, 1959, the official inauguration ceremony celebrated the enrolment of the first class of students. The merger of BMSI and all units of JCH in 1963 resulted in the formation of JPMC under a unified administration led by a Director. Spanning over 148 acres, JPMC evolved into a cluster of buildings dedicated to its primary objectives of providing medical education, training, research, and patient care. Over time, additional buildings were constructed to meet the growing needs of various specialities. Today, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center proudly stands as Pakistan’s largest and best-equipped public sector hospital, Jinnah Hospital Doctors staffed by highly qualified professionals across numerous specialities, ready to deliver quality healthcare services. JPMC also plays a crucial role in training medical graduates, nurses, and technicians while conducting significant clinical and basic medical sciences research.
