HISTORY

SIUT began its journey as an eight-bed unit in the Burns Unit of the Civil Hospital Karachi four decades ago. This tiny ward gradually increased its clinical and physical activity. In 1991, it was designated as an Institute by the Sindh Assembly Act.

To give medical facilities and financial aid to those in the terminal stage of renal diseases, the SIUT Trust was established in 2005 as a charitable trust to benefit the general public.

The Dewan Farooq Medical Complex, named after a kind donor whose generosity helped build the complex, serves as the activity center for SIUT, which is close to the Civil Hospital of Karachi.

SIUT has increased its facilities since obtaining another type of grant from a benefactor, which enabled the establishment of the Hanifa Sulaiman Dawood Oncology Centre. Another significant development for SIUT is the construction of the Oncology Centre, which will make it easier to treat tumors such as bladder, kidney, prostate, adrenal, testicular, and post-transplant malignancies.

FOUNDERS

Dr. Syed Adibul Hasan Rizvi, a prominent Pakistani surgeon and philanthropist, created SIUT. His goal for SIUT was to offer cutting-edge medical care to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

Dr. Rizvi has consistently demonstrated a solid commitment to enhancing healthcare in Pakistan. He understood that the nation’s healthcare system was ineffective and that the weak and poor were the most affected. In 1970, he established SIUT to provide high-quality healthcare to everyone, regardless of the socioeconomic situation.

Dr. Rizvi’s ambition for SIUT has evolved over time. Today, SIUT serves as an example for healthcare systems worldwide and is a top medical facility in Pakistan. The institute has a significant emphasis on research and education. It offers various services, such as urology, nephrology, and transplant surgery.

Despite its success, SIUT continues to uphold Dr. Rizvi’s initial goal of giving free care to those who need it the most. Every year, the center sees more than 500,000 patients, most of whom come from disadvantaged families. It has become a lifeline for many people who would otherwise be unable to obtain high-quality treatment.

SIUT HOSPITALS BRANCHES

Old SIUT Premises

SIUT began as an 8-bed ward of the Civil Hospital’s Burns Ward. It was then relocated to the third level of the Civil Hospital’s Emergency Building. With time, it grew to include a transplant ward, a urology and nephrology ward, an operating room, a lab, radiography, offices, and stores.

There are currently 270 beds available in SIUT’s old building. It houses SIUT’s leading emergency department with 150 beds and a facility for dialysis, medical care, and critical care. Additionally included are the main operating room and the adult urology department.

MEDICAL CENTRE DEWAN FAROOQ

In 1993, the Sindh government granted land for the new building, and the Dewan Family contributed funds to construct the six-story structure that would become the Dewan Farooq Medical Centre. This 425-bed facility offers cutting-edge amenities like outpatient clinics, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, diagnostic and research labs, a central dialysis unit, gastro-hepato-pancreatic-general surgery departments, pediatric urology departments, a transplant ward, operating rooms, a lithotripsy unit, and an academic floor with a library, auditorium, and the Z A School of Medical Technology.

ONCOLOGY CENTRE OF HANIFA SULEMAN

The Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre is a seven-story structure with an area of 80,000 square feet that the Suleman Dawood family generously donated. It first offered services in 2006. The first facility in Pakistan, this 150-bed facility treats post-transplant and urological cancers. It has two radiotherapy machines, a CT scanner, brachytherapy, chemotherapy, and outpatient clinics, all of which are state-of-the-art for treating cancer patients.

Hospital SIUT Mehrunnisa

In 2012, a donor gave a hospital to honor his wife Mehrunnisa so that patients might receive free care there. Beginning its services in 2013 with dialysis, SIUT later expanded other facilities and outfitted the hospital with cutting-edge technology. Daily outpatient services, a dialysis unit with 60 machines, a lithotripsy unit, an operating room, a lab, and radiology are all provided by SIUT Mehrunnisa Hospital. There are 65 beds available for inpatients. The hospital also has a PET scan facility and Cyclotron, the sole public institution offering free cancer diagnosis services.

SUKKUR’S SUIT CHABLANI MEDICAL CENTRE

Nearly half of the patients at SIUT were from Sindh’s interior. Patients come to SIUT from remote locations due to the poor infrastructure and inadequate medical facilities in Sindh’s rural areas. With the assistance of the Government of Sindh, SIUT opened the Chablani Medical Centre in Sukkur in 2009 to provide patients with access to high-quality medical care right at their doorstep. This allowed patients from interior Sindh, lower Punjab, and nearby areas of Balochistan to be referred for early Treatment without incurring the additional costs associated with traveling to Karachi.

SIUT SATELLITE CENTRES

SIUT LADY DIALYSIS CENTRE SIR ABDULLAH HAROON

at a property donated by Mrs. Laila Sarfaraz, SIUT’s first satellite dialysis center opened at Shah Faisal Colony in 1999. The primary goal was to offer free dialysis services right at the patients’ doorsteps who resided in Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, and other nearby communities but could not afford the cost of transportation to the main SIUT center for dialysis twice or three times each week. There are twelve dialysis units.

NAZIMABAD’S SUIT APWA AKRAM KHATOON DIALYSIS CENTRE

In 2012, APWA asked SIUT to treat the patients in its building in Nazimabad. To provide dialysis services to residents in Nazimabad and the surrounding areas, SIUT decided to build a satellite dialysis center. The RO Plant was used to establish the center. Currently, 42 dialysis machines provide services in 3–4 shifts to 150 patients daily.

SIUT HAJIANI CHATUL BAI DIALYSIS CENTRE, GARDEN WEST

In 2012, the Shaikh of Mitiari gave SIUT a Garden West bungalow with a 7500 square foot footprint to use as a dialysis facility in honor of Hajiani Chatul Bai. SIUT first began offering free dialysis treatments with 12 machines and established a RO facility to clean the water needed for dialysis. Twenty-eight dialysis units are now housed in the center, which has expanded. Four shifts per day benefit about 120 patients.

SIUT LARKANA DIALYSIS CENTRE

To allow residents of Larkana to receive dialysis in their city rather than traveling to Sukkur or Karachi, SIUT developed a dialysis center on property provided by the Government of Sindh in 2020. Additionally, it offers for dialysis patients who reside in nearby cities. There are 26 machines in the facility, which work three shifts daily and treat about 70 patients for dialysis.

CENTRE FOR SIUT MUZAFFAR DIALYSIS

When Muzaffarabad experienced a significant earthquake in October 2008, SIUT was among the first teams to arrive and set up a relief camp to help those affected by the quake by offering acute dialysis, surgical support, and intensive care management. The healthcare system suffered severe harm. Following the relief efforts, SIUT opened a dialysis center at the Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences and gave 12 dialysis machines as a gift to the people of Azad Kashmir, who may now get free dialysis. The facility continues to offer free dialysis services with assistance from the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
